I have many happy memories of Dennis, and we shared many great conversations about our shared love for football. My favourite was a story he told me about his refereeing days.
Dennis was in charge of a very important match, a cup final, I think. At a critical point of the game, a challenge led to a penalty claim that was hotly disputed by the opposition with players from both teams angrily circling Dennis and a situation that could easily get out of control and turn unpleasant. Dennis told me that he calmly waved the angry players away, informing them that out of respect he would consult the linesman who he then ran towards.
As he neared the concerned looking linesman, Dennis approached him and asked him about the weather to the linesman's obvious confusion. Dennis then explained that the 2 sets of players waiting on the pitch were now becalmed thinking that Dennis was consulting him for a ruling, but actually, Dennis had already made his decision and was not planning to change it based on player pressure. He then ran back to the players, leaving a relieved linesman, blew his whistle and gave his decision.
I always found Dennis a wise man and this was him a nutshell, taking a calm pragmatic action that defused a difficult situation, keeping everyone happy whilst making the right decision. Cheerio Dennis, much missed.

I am I and you are you, whatever we were to each other that we still are.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was.
